Colnialism essays
Colnialism essays Colonialism is one of the possible outcomes of imperialism, which in turn is the process of establishing a relationship, formal or informal, in which one state controls the effective political sovereignty of another political society. This relationship can be achieved by force, by political collaboration, by economic, social or cultural dependence. To be more precise colonialism is the rule of a region by an external sovereign power. One could say that Imperialism is a domination and subjection of the people that the country is colonizing essentially. Colonialism essentially is the settling of a foreign land and creating a colony, they see the land; they take through force (Military) and colonize it by bringing in colonists to settle the land. Some of the reasons for colonialism and to why it happened was because of natural resources this being the biggest reason why, as well for the cheap labor it could provide through the indigenous population, and for its location. To when the B rit's went into India and dominated it this was Imperialism Thus it was also Colonialism. The Brits went in and scared and influenced the indigenous people, they did this so that the natives could establish a system of government much alike they're own and rule the country much the same way that the Brits ruled, thus making themselves look more superior. When the British were picking and then setting up they're colony they had no idea what they were walking into with this country, in colonizing though you want this because of geographical location and strategically placing. While the Brits were in India they created an army of indigenous people ruled by British officers. To achieve a more self-sufficient ruling they sent native officers to Strasburg military college to be trained and come back westernized officers. The British would bring in "aliens" (foreigners) for the labor that was needed for the colony. The British believed that they w ...

How do you view about the future of Korean Americans in the global Essay
How do you view about the future of Korean Americans in the global context - Essay Example Similar is the case with Korean Americans or if we use proper words ââ¬Å"Americans of Korean Descentâ⬠. Korean Americans, despite having lived in America for decades, still maintain their characteristic identity. Koreans always value their Korean identity and origin. They are always proud to learn and speak their own language. The vast majority of Korean Americans are against the idea of inter-racial marriages. Most of the Korean Americans demonstrate a strong sense of ethnic pride, family priority and always prefer to attend a church of Korean ethnicity. The rate at which migration was taking place from Korea to America showed a dramatic decrease during the past ten years. Perhaps the reason behind such drop in immigration rates is the change that was witnessed in South Korea. The rapid economic growth of South Korea which made it the ââ¬ËAsian Tigerââ¬â¢ is the main reason behind this change. This phenomenon resulted in a reverse immigration pattern between the two countries. Internationally speaking, as the Korean land shows progress, it is a source of satisfaction and pride form the Korean Americans, since they maintain strong ties with their native land. A number of organizations are busy in improving the relationships between Korean Americans and Native Americans. A general trend has been an improvement seen in the English speaking abilities of the Korean Americans which has ultimately improved their life standards while improving their experience of exposure to the other nations of the world. Slowly, the level of isolation of Korean Americans is declining. From being a separate group of immigrants in a foreign land, they are being transformed into an active part of the American community. The Korean heritage which has been limited to the Koreans themselves is now being shared with Native Americans. A number of Korean festivals are held in American land where Korean people celebrate and

A Capstone Experience(Factors and Trends that Influence Strategy Assignment - 2
A Capstone Experience(Factors and Trends that Influence Strategy Development)3 - Assignment Example Investment strategies involve spending on innovation and market diversification. During the recession, businesses that use investment strategies implement strategic change that would not have occurred. The strategies are risky; however, most businesses have excelled in implementing strategic change. The strategies would see the business managers focusing on short-term survival. Additionally, the recession period deprives the business of its resources, therefore, failure in implementing the strategic change. Ambidextrous strategies are a combination of both retrenchment and investment strategies. Businesses that adopt these strategies adapt under recession conditions by cost and asset cutting, and investment in product innovation and market development. The factors to be considered to attain product differentiation during the new post-recession consumer environment is; good business location that creates convenience to the customers, and price differentiation which is giving the customers the value for their money. Luxury goods are items that are not necessary for living, but are highly desired within a society. Marketers should not abandon their efforts to establish premium pricing because where luxury goes, consumers will follow. Luxury brands can charge premium prices as long as the integrity of the product is not compromised (Hayward, 2010). Consumer attitudes have a benefit and demerit to the marketer. Companies have to set strategies based on how consumers think about their product. For example, Wal-Mart offers their goods at lower prices to attract more customers. Lower prices in Wal-Mart are a motivation employed by the store to market their product in these hard economic times (Dean,

Eating with Your Hands Essay Example for Free
Eating with Your Hands Essay Society today is one big melting pot. People bring their customs and cultural traditions and it conglomerates with others creating these norms we follow. We live by, what time has created over time, a status quo, or social rights and wrongs. In the passage, Eating with Your Hands, the author opens the topic about etiquette, one of the major social controversies. She talks about why some foods are only acceptable to be eaten with proper utensils while others can be ââ¬Å"finger foodâ⬠. Itââ¬â¢s trueââ¬âbut why is that a known rule? And why is it frowned upon? The passage has some background history of people groups within certain countries eating food with their hands, and how it almost gives an individual a better sense of what he or she is eating. The author brings up how itââ¬â¢s the meeting of the soul and the skin; whereas silverware places a distance between you and your food. She compares it to that of two people making loveââ¬âgiving food and yourself an intimate relationship. I got the sense that society has changed the soul and feeling behind food and meals due to the kosher norms of modern day etiquette. Personally I have never given thought to how I eat my food in comparison with other cultures. Growing up in twenty-first century America I have always eaten the way Im ââ¬Å"supposedâ⬠to; I never gave it a second thought. My culture has almost given me tunnel vision, letting me focus only on what I know as acceptable or natural. This topic opens my mind to what else I might be blinded to. I have never explored what other cultures grow accustomed to like religion, style, relationships, family dynamics or even school. I have always considered myself incredibly fortunate for the life I live, and therefore I never examined the varying cultural aspects of differing nations or people groups. As far as the message of society erasing the intimacy of our meals to ourselves, I can absolutely sympathize with the authorââ¬â¢s thoughts. In retrospect, the singular thing that could most certainly bring my family together was the warm meal that awaited us. The physicality of sharing a meal together provided each of us the opportunities to engage, with every member of my family, our singular experiences. Food is a social activity! Assuredly, eating is an activity. When an individual goes out with his or her friends, more often than not they all get dinner together. When one throws a birthday party, a favorite restaurant or catering or favorite home-cooked meal is involved. Social interactions like dating usually incorporate food of some sort. In the generation of everything digital, it is common to take a picture of a meal and post it to a social media. Food has always been a part of social interaction. I do think that society has put a strain on the comfort of eating how we desire, without our conscious recognition. Perhaps because we grew up learning that we couldnt eat spaghetti with both hands.

Hemingway Style Analysis Essay -- essays research papers fc
1 Earnest Hemingway is one of Americas foremost authors. His many works, their style, themes and parallels to his actual life have been the focus of millions of people as his writing style set him apart from all other authors. Many conclusions and parallels can be derived from Earnest Hemingway's works. In the three stories I review, ?Hills Like White Elephants?, ?Indian Camp? and ?A Clean, Well-lighted Place? we will be covering how Hemingway uses foreigners, the service industry and females as the backbones of these stories. These techniques play such a critical role in the following stories that Hemingway would be unable to move the plot or character development forward without them. In ?Hills Like White Elephants? Hemingway utilizes the waitress as a method to help develop the character of the lead male. His interaction at the beginning of the story with the waitress in her native language show his intellectual superiority which is also emphasized in the following line, ?The girl looked at the bead curtain. 'They've painted something on it,' she said. 'What does it say?'? (Hemingway). This setup is a crucial transition from the blank slate we start at with both characters. The story of course unfolds following what the interaction with the waitress and bar setting created for us. One in which the lead male character is dominant, controlling and a person who provides information and answers not available to the female character. Additionally the male characters treatment of the female waitress creates the building blocks for our understanding of how he interacts with females. He never mentions please or thank you 2 when ordering or receiving their first drinks and by the second round acts in the follow way, ?The man called 'Listen' through the curtain.? when addressing the waitress (Hemingway). It is only a few lines later he begins semi-jokingly and in condescending manner scolding his female partner. The condescending remarks start with, ?'Just because you say I wouldn't have doesn't prove anything.'? the man replies to her assertion that he hasn't seen white elephants (Hashmi). Besides being hot in this story, the males only burden is that he is trying to persuade his female partner to his views as he tries to coach her through the remaining portion of the dialog manipulative lines such as, ?'Well,' the man said, 'if you don't want to you don't ha... ...hite Elephants? For the tourist and the foreigner
A Dying Colonialism is a story of how Fanon, during the Algerian Revolution, described how people changed the century-old cultural ways and adopted a certain practice that was designed to destroy the so called ââ¬Å"tyrantsâ⬠during that time.On the first part of the book, Fanon devoted many pages to the veil and its political importance:ââ¬Å"For the tourist and the foreigner, the veil demarcates both Algerian society and its feminine counterpart.â⬠(A dying colonialism, pg. 35-36)There is a certain complexity of the role of the veil in the Algerian revolution. There have been issues with European bosses trying to put their male Algerian employees on the corner by demanding that they bring their wives to company functions. So the dilemma is that if they agree to do as their bosses wish, they are going against their cultural ruling out against women being on display but if they decline, they would be risking their jobs they risked losing their jobs.â⬠And so, as Fano n has stated,ââ¬Å"The rape of the Algerian woman in the dream of a Europeanâ⬠¦is always preceded by a rending of the veil.â⬠(A Dying Colonialism, pg. 45)On the first part of the book, one could see that Fanon emphasized the fact how women are distinguished during those times. The veil distinguishes an Algerian from a foreigner, and was stated in the page of the book below, one could see that Fanon took care in reiterating the fact that there are very clear distinctions on the society during those times.ââ¬Å"In the case of an Algerian man, on the other hand, regional medications can be noted: the fez in urban centers, turbans, and djellabas in the countryside. The masculine garb allows a certain, margin of choice, a modicum of heterogeneity. The woman seen in her white veil unifies the perception that one has of Algerian feminine society. Obviously, what we have here is a uniform which tolerates no modifications, no variant. The haik very clearly demarcates the Algerian colonized society. it is of course possible to remain hesitant before a little girl, but all uncertainty vanishes at the time of puberty. With the veil, the things become well-defined and ordered. The Algerian woman in the eyes of the observer, Is unmistakably ââ¬Å"she who hides behind the veilâ⬠(A Dying Colonialism, pg. 36)From the phrases above, one could see that there are certain way accepted way on how people should go about things. And that is what they wanted to change. They wanted to change the image of a traditional woman and they have transformed and defined women in a different light. That was why their political doctrine at that time was that ââ¬Å"If we want to destroy the structure of Algerian society, its capacity for resistance, we must first conquer the women; we must go and find them behind their veil where they hide themselves and in the houses where men keep them out of sightâ⬠(pg.38) It was a very striking and very meaningful phrase such that it im plies the power that women have that they think they havenââ¬â¢t explored yet.By finding these women behind their veil, it not only implies letting them know what they really are and should be, but it is also an implication that there are options that are yet to be explored in the governance of a country as rigid as Algeria during those times. If women can be conquered and put to use, there is so much unexpected things that can happen. The mind of a woman is yet to be explored and exploited and by un-inhibiting them from self-expression, the possibilities of changing the Algerian society are infinite.A Dying Colonialism is a story of the liberation and newly discovered power Fanon claims that the Algerian women have struggled for and succeeded through their active involvement in the Algerian. It was also implied in the book that Fanon believed that the recent victory of women for respect and equality held by the prominent women was permanent, an indication of the outlook on â⬠Å"modern,â⬠socialist, revolutionary Algeria.
